Home Treatment for Toenail Fungus

By Trisha Coole

There are many toenail fungus treatment options nowadays, natural, over the counter, prescribed and some home remedies that let you try clearing it up yourself. It is very important to remember when deciding how to treat yourself, that whatever toenail fungus treatment options you look at, completely curing toenail fungus takes time. Time as in months, not weeks, and certainly not days. This means you need to remember to do the treatment each day or as instructed. This article looks at a couple of popular home treatment options amongst sufferers of mild fungus infections.

Trimming back infected nails. Infected nails need to be cut back as far as you can. Do not damage the skin, but cut them as short as possible to get rid of infected nail and some of the fungus. This also helps to make it a little easier for any treatment to reach the fungus under the nail that remains. After trimming sterilize the clippers to stop the infection moving to other nails.

Treating toenail fungus with vinegar. Remember that dealing with nail fungus yourself is not always successful and some treatments work for one person but not another. However it is worth trying this one if you only have a mild case. Fill a foot bath or container that will take both feet with enough vinegar to cover your nails completely and soak for 30 minutes. Repeat this every day and in two to three weeks you should to see some improvement.

A Listerine Foot Bath. There are many toenail fungal infection sufferers who have tried Listerine with success, but there are also many who have had none so whether you want to try it is up to you. It is not made for the treatment of toenail fungus so the makers do not recommend it. Use it as you do the vinegar to make a foot bath to soak your nails in. You may have some discoloring of the nails caused by the treatment but it is not permanent.

OTC treatments. OTC means over the counter, products that you can buy from over the counter at a pharmacy and use at home to treat yourself. They vary in the ingredients they use, some using natural, some drugs, and some a combination. Some sufferers report positive results and some do not so you will have to chose one and try it. ZetaClear is an example of a topical over the counter treatment option but there are many others.
